DAVID PERECKO, 18

David

February 23, 1998 was a day that changed my life forever. That was the day I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I was 8 years old, and of course, I did not realize what the diagnosis meant or just how it would effect the following years of my life. When I started treatment, I was not exactly sure what was going on; all the appointments, medications, blood tests and treatments that I had to endure were somewhat overwhelming.

I am now a strong, healthy, determined 18 year-old; it’s been almost 10 years since my diagnosis! I am in my first year of university, pursuing a degree in science. My dream is to continue onto medical school to become a pediatric oncologist. The joy I feel from being given a second chance at life should not, and will not, be kept for myself. My desire is to spread this joy and to bring hope and healing to others.
